World Cup 2014: Portugal Ties U.S. With Goal in Stoppage Time

The United States used goals by Jermaine Jones and Clint Dempsey to take a 2-1 lead, but a stoppage-time goal by Silvestre Varela gave Portugal a 2-2 tie in Manaus, Brazil, on Sunday.
The United States, which would have secured a place in the World Cup’s knockout stage with a victory, now sits in a tie for first place in Group G with Germany, the team’s opponent in its final game of the group stage, set for Thursday. Sunday’s result means the United States can be eliminated in the group stage only through tiebreakers.
The Portugal star Cristiano Ronaldo, dealing with a knee injury, was held scoreless. Dempsey, who sustained a broken nose last week, played without a protective mask and scored in the 81st minute.
