Sunday’s result means the United States can be eliminated in the group stage only through tiebreakers.
The Portugal star Cristiano Ronaldo, dealing with a knee injury, was held scoreless. Dempsey, who sustained a broken nose last week, played without a protective mask and scored in the 81st minute.
